I am a capital ‘S’ Slut for Vogue Beauty Secrets, right. It’s done the impossible and replaced Midsommar as my comfort media (mentally ill check am I right? on a real tho, I am experiencing massive mental growth rn and you bet I wrote a blog all about it right here), and honestly, I feel like I’m becoming the best version of myself in-part thanks to the tips and tricks I’ve picked up. In our world of social media, we’re seeing so many ridiculously beautiful and heavily filtered faces that it’s easy to feel a twinge of self loathing. Fear not fellow girlboss, I’ve compiled the five best habits that I’ve picked up from the It Girls of our generation that will have you feeling yourself and totally glowing.
Q: How can you tell LJ wrote a blog?
A: When there’s a needless definition section ofc!
So WTF even is an It Girl?
It Girl: def. an attractive young woman who is perceived to be productive and engaging in self-care and self-betterment.
The modern definition of an It Girl has shifted away from what it was in, like, the 90s because everything from the 90s is now old as fuck (sorry, millennials). It Girls used to be an impossible combination of sexy and engaging which is obviously so unobtainable for young women (snore). The term used to feel super man-coded to me, like it was all about being as desirable as humanly possible, but our modern It Girl is a girlie who is constantly learning and growing, bettering herself every day, and being super fucking hot whilst doing it. Our first It Girl habit is going to be telling yourself that you’re hot, so jot than one down real quick for me. And hot isn’t just Malibu-bottle-blonde-size-zero anymore, you can be hot in literally any way you want. Congrats on being a total hottie!! Let’s get to the self-improving.
1. Bella’s Ice Bath
If you’re boujee enough to indulge in cryotherapy but not quite boujee enough to pay big p’s to get it done at a fancy cosmetology practice, this one’s for you. Get some ice cubes and chuck them in a bowl of water, take a deep breathe, and whack your face in there for about 20 seconds. If that’s a bit intense, try investing in an ice roller, or store stone facial massage tools in the freezer. This will de-puff your skin in the AM, and close your pores as well as increasing blood flow and reducing inflammation which is a total win for those of us with acne. Plus it doesn’t have to cost you a penny more to implement this cool trick into your routine.
2. Zoe’s Hair Oiling
As well as showing off a sickening selection of high end beauty, Zoe Kravitz bestowed upon on us the wisdom of every MoC (Mum of Colour) since the dawn of time - oiling your hair. Not using those fancy specially formulated hair oils, but instead raiding the kitchen cupboards for the good shit - oil. Coconut oil is Zoe’s oil of choice, and it’s become mine too. If like me, you possess dry ass poodle hair (I believe that’s the medical term), warm up a teaspoon of coconut oil in your palms and scrunch it through the ends of your hair to restore moisture and revive your curlie wurlies, girlies! Side note - keep coconut oil away from your scalp or it’ll set and leave you with the oiliest and most tropical scented dandruff ever.
3. Literally Everything Gwyneth Paltrow Does (but specifically body brushing)
‘But LJ Gwyneth Paltrow isn’t an It Girl?”. Well she is to me, and guess what, numb-nuts, I’m the one writing this article. Anyway, everyone’s favourite not-relatable wellness guru reminded us all of the importance of body brushing - running a dry dense-bristle brush over your skin can massively improve circulation and improve your skin’s texture and appearance. Just apply light pressure and brush towards your heart, or clockwise around your stomach, and take a moment to get off on the fact that it hurts a little before feeling like a total wellness queen. It takes literally two minutes, but feels like a little ritual.
4. Beabadoobee’s Grungy Liner
Now hear me out on this one - I know we’re all in our skincare eras where we double cleanse so there’s nothing left on our skin at all, but Bea puts liner onto her waterline before she falls asleep to achieve the perfect grunge look. If the thought of sleeping in makeup makes your skin crawl, take a tip from my own Vogue Beauty Secrets video (manifesting) and put on your liner then wash your face before doing the rest of your makeup - it gives you the most perfect darkened lower lash line that is just *chef’s kiss*. Bea is also the beauty and brains behind our modern fake freckles trend, which is a great way to hide some texture without having to layer up foundations which can often make your skin worse. Two tips in one! Joint slay!
5. Olivia’s Skin Detox
Olivia Rodrigo loves stripped back skincare, and honestly, you might too. If you’re dealing with skin conditions like acne or dry skin, chucking loads of chemicals at it probs isn’t the wisest decision, especially if you don’t know which products match. Try a skin detox - just wash your face with a soap free cleanser that fits your skin type, and if you don’t know your skin type we’ve got a handy dandy quiz here that might be of some help. If you fancy splurging on some new stripped back skincare (and I mean really splurging), have a gander at Drunk Elephant - a brand that focuses on skin detox. If it works for Miss Rodrigo, it’s for sure worth a try.
